Tribute To Our Grieving Mothers

April 16th        It’s a “Tribute To Our Grieving Mothers” Day.

LORD WE PRAY FOR OUR MOTHERS WHO GRIEVE AT THE LOSS OF THEIR CHILDREN. AMEN.

There is a Jewish Proverb which says: “God could not be everywhere, and so He made Mothers.”  The authors of the Gospels share with us the seven last sayings of Jesus on the cross. It is recorded that he said to His grieving mother; “Dear Woman, here is your son!” and “Son Here is your mother!” He said this when He saw His mother standing near the cross with the Apostle John, whom He loved, He committed His mother’s care into John’s hands. And from that hour John took her unto his own home (John 19:26-27). In this verse Jesus, ever the compassionate Son, is making sure His earthly mother is cared for after His death. He saw His mother’s grief and I’m sure He felt her pain. Even though she was watching her son being murdered she was blessed because Jesus left her an insurance policy which was her care by John. It wasn’t ‘All State’ but she was in good hands.

This makes me think about all the grieving mothers I have met over the past 20 plus years as a Police Chaplain and over 35 years as a Minister.  When a child is murdered or even just dies all the family hurts but nobody hurts like the mother. She is the one who carried that child for nine months and gave birth to him. She is the one who brought that life into this world. She is the one who raised and nurtured him. So when she grieves she grieves from the womb. She wails and cries from her guts, from her inner most being. I’m thinking of this young mother who just lost her 4-year-old child. I’m thinking of the mothers of murdered children from Chester, Philadelphia, Detroit, Washington, Chicago and New York, just to name a few cities. I’m thinking of the mothers who have lost their children to the prison system. Yes, I’m just thinking about all the mothers who have lost their children in one way or another. We must pray to God for their strength and their determination to still fight and live on.

To my young brothers I say make your mother proud of you by making a change in your life. If you don’t want to change then at least buy and pay for a burial insurance policy. That will at least give her some peace of mind and enough money to bury you. My God, too many mothers are grieving. If we ever needed The Lord, we need Him now.

I want to close my message with one of my favorite poems by Langston Hughes entitled:    “Mother to Son”

“Well, son, I’ll tell you:  Life for me ain’t been no crystal stair.  It’s had tacks in it, and splinters, and boards torn up, And places with no carpet on the floor, Bear.  But all the time I’se been a-climbin’ on, And reaching’ landin’s, and turnin’ corners, and sometimes goin’ in the dark where there ain’t been no light.  So, boy, don’t you turn back.  Don’t you set down on the steps. Cause you find it’s kinder hard. Don’t you fall now For I’se still goin’, honey, I’se still climbin’, And life for me ain’t been no crystal stair.”
