MAKE A DIFFERENCE

March 8th

It’s a “Make A Difference” Day.

OUR FATHER WHICH ARE IN HEAVEN WE BLESS YOUR NAME WITH OUR LIPS AND OUR ACTIONS TOWARDS AND FOR ONE ANOTHER. AMEN.

We all have songs that we remember from our past that helped shape our way of thinking. For me, other than the many gospel songs my grandmother taught me, I would hasten to say it was two songs by The Godfather of Soul, James Brown. One was “Say it loud I’m black, and I’m proud” and the other uses the phrase “Talking loud and saying nothing!”

Now I take that to mean that a person is all talk and no action. We have a lot of people like that in our community. They talk the talk, but they don’t walk the walk. They complain about the problems in our cities such as youth and domestic violence, poor schools, drug dealing and addiction, just to name a few, but they present no action towards solving the problem. O’ I hear you say; “What can I do? I’m just me. I’m just one person.”

Well, you can do a lot. You can make a difference. When was the last time you spent some quality time with a young person? When was the last time you went to a school board or community meeting? When was the last time you volunteered at a youth center? When was the last time you voted in an election? When was the last time you went to the school in your neighborhood to make it better? When was the last time your Fraternal, Church, Civic, Social or Masonic group gave out scholarships to help some young person go to college?

If life is going to get better for our children, we have to do more than talk a good game. The Bible speaks of Jesus teaching His disciples about service and He says we must feed the hungry, clothe the naked, help the homeless and visit the sick and those in prison. For when we do this, we do this to Him and for Him.

People, we must be hearers of the word as well as doers of the word. If we don’t, we make the words of Brother Brown so very true. “We’re talking loud and saying (doing) nothing.” Ask yourself if I die today, what will people say about me? Will they say you made a difference in a child’s life? What type of legacy are you leaving? Will they say you made a way or will they say you were in the way?
