It’s a “Leader Is” Day
LORD, LEAD US IN THE PATHS OF RIGHTEOUSNESS THAT WE MIGHT RIGHTEOUSLY LEAD OTHERS. AMEN.
Several years ago, I was privileged, honored and blessed to work for W. Wilson Goode, Sr. the first African-American to be elected mayor of the city of Philadelphia. I was the Director of a homeless shelter, and I had several employees under my care. One of the first things he told me was that he wanted me to be a leader and not a boss and that is what I tried to be when I worked there.
The story is told that H. Gordon Selfridge built up one of the world’s largest department stores in London. He achieved success by being a leader, not a boss. Here is his comparison of the two types of executives:
The boss drives his men; the leader coaches them.
The boss depends on upon authority; the leader on good will.
The boss inspires fear; the leader inspires enthusiasm.
The boss says “I”; the leader, “we.”
The boss fixes the blame for the breakdown; the leader fixes the breakdown.
The boss knows how it is done; the leader shows how.
The boss says, “Go”; the leader says “Let’s go!”
So if God has blessed you to be a leader always remember a “Leader Is”:
Self-reliant but not Self-sufficient
Energetic but not Self-seeking
Steadfast but not Stubborn
Tactful but not Timid
Serious but not Sullen
Loyal but not Sectarian
Unmovable but not Stationary
Gentle but not Hypersensitive
Tender-hearted but not Touchy
Conscientious but not a Perfectionist
Discipline but not Demanding
Generous but not Gullible
Meek but not Weak
Humorous but not Hilarious
Friendly but not Familiar
Holy but not Holier-than-thou
Discerning but not Critical
Progressive but not Pretentious
What kind of leader are you?
