It’s a “23rd Psalms” Day.
LORD, WE THANK YOU FOR BEING OUR DIVINE SHEPHERD. AMEN
The story is told about a church which held an oratorical contest every year on the 23rd Psalms. You know the one that says: “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” (Psalms 23:1-6 KJV).
One particular year there were only two contestants that entered the contest, a very educated young man and an older gentleman who dropped out of school in the 10th grade. Well, the night of the contest the church was packed. There was standing room only. The first one to go was the young man. He recited the Psalms in a very eloquent way. He crossed every T and dotted every I. His voice vibrated with such a majestic authority that when he was done, there was a thunderous applause which had everyone standing on their feet. Next came the old man with the limited education. He slowly walked his way to the podium. He began his oration as best he could. He stumbled over a few words, and there was some feebleness in his voice. But when he was done men and women were wiping tears from their eyes. Mothers were holding their children ever so closely. The old man took his seat, and there was finally a hush over the audience.
As they sat waiting for the judges’ decision the organist played the old hymn: “Just a closer walk with thee.” Finally, the judges announced their decision and the winner was the old man. A young kid jumped up and shouted “How could that be? The young man was flawless with the Psalms, and the old stumbled with it.” The head judge replied, “Very true my son but you see the difference was the fact that the young man knew the Psalms but the old man knew the Shepherd.” Beloved, it’s good to know the word, but it’s best to know GOD. So the questions of the day are: “Do you know the Shepherd? Does the Shepherd know you?
