It’s a “Thank A Cop” Day.
LORD, WE PRAY FOR THOSE WHO LIVE TO SERVE AND PROTECT US AND MAKE OUR COMMUNITIES SAFE TO LIVE IN. AMEN.
Every year I attend an annual memorial service honoring police officers in Delaware County, PA, who died in the line of duty. They were peacemakers and Jesus said, “Blessed are the Peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.” (Matthew 5:9, KJV). Personally, I believe that we don’t honor our law enforcement officers as we should. They put their lives on the line for us each and every day and go into situations that we run from. They see the horrors of life and have to deal with it. If one of them does something wrong, they are all blamed for it. This is a factual truth; there are more positive officers than there are negative. In life, you will find good and bad in everything, but we must not destroy something because some aspect of it is not good. We must work together to make it better and not allow one bad apple to spoil the whole bunch.
We need to lift our law enforcement persons, from the federal level to the local level, up and pray for them as well as their families because of the sacrifices that they make. Think about it; they have a job that is more dangerous than ever and their main goal every day is to get back home to their family when work is over. There are those who look at the police with a negative eye until a crime affects them, and then they complain that it took them too long to respond. With all the lawlessness and violence in our communities, I hate to think about what it would be like without our brothers and sisters who wear the uniform and carry the badge. So we must thank them and ask God to bless them and protect them. They wear the badge, and there is a lot of pride but also pain behind the badge.
My fellow Police Chaplain Mark Shook wrote a poem entitled “Behind the Badge.” I liked it so much that I wrote my version to honor all who serve in the law enforcement profession.
Behind the badge is a parent, grandparent, spouse, sister, brother, son, daughter, and friend.
Behind the badge are dedication, idealism, frustration, exhaustion, terror, and exaltation.
Behind the badge are justice and mercy, strength and compassion, law and humanity.
Behind the badge is a person with eyes and ears, blood, sweat and tears, heart, mind, and soul.
So because of this, we pray that God will be with them behind the badge.
O God walk with them down each unlit passageway. Rise with them to handle a family in crisis. Shelter them from the cynicism born of seeing too much drama, trauma, and tragedy.
O God be behind the badge and strengthen the families of our fallen officers with the warmth of your love. Yes, O God please be behind the badge and sustain us with your compassion and guide us to a world of justice, love, and everlasting peace. Beloved, when was the last time you told a cop, “Thank You”?
